About this app

Open whoBIRD outdoors and it listens. When a bird sings nearby its name appears on the screen within seconds, from a list of more than 6,000 species worldwide.

The recognition runs on your phone using the BirdNET model, so it keeps working deep in a wood or far from any signal. It uses your location and the time of year to rule out birds that could not be there, and keeps a list of everything it has heard that you can back up or share.

The model files download the first time you open the app, so start it once on Wi-Fi. Wind, traffic and distance all affect accuracy — the settings include a high-pass filter and a confidence threshold to help in noisy places.
